Daredevil/Punisher: Seventh Circle Review (Charles Soule, Szymon Kudranski)

A Russian gangster is being transported from New York to Texas because Daredevil wants him to stand trial before probably being executed by the state; Punisher wants to execute him right now in New York himself. Oh, the subtle difference between two people who’re more similar than they’d admit! And then the two slug it out.

I don’t know what it is but whenever these two characters get together, it’s the worst (David Lapham did an equally bad Daredevil/Punisher story a few years ago). And this book, Seventh Circle, is aptly named because it is a hellish read: zero story, nothing to engage with, no decent character moments, no great scenes, just schlocky, forgettable action from the first page to the last. I don’t know who would find this superficial crap in the least bit compelling.

I read this as a trade paperback so maybe something was lost in the transition as it was originally a Marvel Infinite Comic meaning it was designed to be read digitally - maybe the action would’ve wowed me more in that format. As it is, it’s just flat and unexciting. Punisher and Daredevil fight (along with Daredevil’s awful new sidekick, Blindspot), they race across the city, repeat again again again, the end. What a predictable, dull, terrible comic.

Charles Soule used to be a really good writer - check out his indie work for some insanely good books - and even his early Marvel stuff from 2013 like She-Hulk was great, but his comics these last few years have been so bad that to me his name has become synonymous with pure hacky garbage; Daredevil/Punisher: Seventh Circle does nothing to change that trend.
