Leaving Megalopolis: Surviving Megalopolis Review (Gail Simone, Jim Calafiore)

Something happened to the superheroes of Megalopolis and they all became homicidal maniacs. A small group of civilians managed to survive in the first book, Leaving Megalopolis, and in the sequel they’re now going back in - the nightmare begins again!

Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore’s Surviving Megalopolis is a weak follow-up to their decent indie book, Leaving Megalopolis. The story is contrived, pointless and boring and reads like a corny ‘80s action B-movie. Simone’s heroes-gone-bad are static and dull, not doing anything different from the first book.

Jim Calafiore’s art is good. The wrecked cityscape looks very cool and epic and the superhero action looks great which you would expect from someone who’s drawn for Marvel and DC. It’s a lot more violent than anything published by the Big 2 though!

The story is a snoozefest, none of the characters are in the least bit compelling, even the nutty superheroes who you thought might’ve at least done some interesting evil shit unfortunately don’t, and the ending is total crap too - I definitely won’t be coming back for the next book. This comic should be called Enduring Megalopolis!
